Anxiety & Systems

In a recent article on "The Ladder" we explored the topic of anxiety in social systems.

Anxiety gives the illusion of control in the midst of loss. Growth in the gospel helps us acknowledge loss and turn toward the promises of hope. Jesus said, "I am making all things new". Revelation 21:5.

Yall com'on over

If you grab a handful of theology and squeeze really hard, the stuff that oozes through your fingers is called hospitality. Debates, apologetics, systematics... nothing can compare to hospitality (aka faith in motion).
In last month's update we shared a photo of a summer morning group exploring questions about Christianity. We invited these guys to our home last week for bratwurst and badminton. Nothing fancy, just a way to tell these men that they are loved.

A Two-Way Bridge

In an effort to build a "two-way bridge" between the Church and the Marketplace we are designing monthly gatherings at community co-working spaces.
Last week, in cooperation with Living Fellowship Church in Alpharetta, a group gathered at Thrive Coworking to explore an open forum for the community to explore relevant topics and Christianity. New Vertical's goal is to engage three groups of people.
  • "SBNR" (the spiritual but not religious)
  • People whose schedules don't overlap with Church rhythms.
  • Those who self-distance from the Church.
This partnership allows us to support Living Fellowship (and other area churches) in an accessible, inviting, and "zero barrier" environment.

Who is invited?

The gatherings at coworking spaces mentioned above open tremendous opportunities to engage the broader business community. While places like Thrive, Switchyards, etc. have internal communities, they also serve as gathering spots for the region.

New Vertical can attend networking events like the one pictured below and offer these gatherings as a resource. Many of the leaders at these gatherings are carrying tremendous burdens with no support structure. Your support equips New Vertical to engage the Marketplace with the gospel.

Monthly Team?

We are tremendously grateful for the one time support we have received. God has used these resources to build the foundation of a tremendous vision. But our need for monthly donors still remains.

We need to raise an additional 1800/month from individual donors by December. We are praying for individuals to join our team at 50, 100, 200 per month. Perhaps God is nudging you to join our financial team? Perhaps you know someone who could join our team? Here is our giving link. Please pray for us and this goal.

New Vertical seeks to build a sustainable discipleship pipeline by shepherding those outside the local Church. We are grateful to the PRCC (The multi-denominational chaplaincy arm of the PCA), our Board of Directors, and the many friends who support us. We cannot do it without you.

Please Pray for:

Please Pray for:
  • Those in our ministry who are making decisions for Christ. They face significant internal and external challenges.
  • Wisdom and resources as we develop the monthly gatherings at coworking spaces.
  • Church partnerships
  • Please continue to pray for our family and the New Vertical Board.

Grateful

We know support comes in many forms. We cannot pioneer marketplace ministry without you. Thank you for your support. You are loved and we are grateful.
His Grace is enough.

A Reason to Rise

Who is God? What is he like? How can I have a relationship with him? People have been asking these questions for thousands of years. While some prefer to explore these questions privately, others long for a group discussion. New Vertical seeks to foster both kinds of opportunities.

The group pictured below is gathering for a 6-part series based on the book "Reason for God". The discussion includes a biblical perspective on the mysteries of faith.

Some of the morning topics have been.
  1. Is the bible a myth?
  2. Is there only one way to God?
  3. Legalism vs Holiness.
  4. Why does God allow suffering?
  5. Who is responsible for evil?
  6. How can God be loving and wrathful at the same time?

A Two-Way Bridge

One of our strategic initiatives is to build a "two-way bridge" between the Church and the Marketplace. The bridge is built with three distinct people groups in mind.
  • "SBNR" (the spiritual but not religious)
    • By the time Gen Z assimilates into the Marketplace fewer than 30% of Americans will perceive themselves as Christian. While a large portion of the remaining 70% are often interested in exploring faith, they are opposed to organized religion (Sunday morning, etc.)
  • Select economies such as: Hospitality, Youth Travel Sports, and Entertainment.
    • A functional rift between particular Churches and these industries is growing. Those associating with these industries struggle to find biblical paths for faith questions.
  • Those who self-distance themselves from the Church.
    • People who remove themselves from organized Church often maintain a strong interest in spiritual matters. Their numbers are growing and reasons unique.
Imagine a two-way bridge connecting Christian community to these three groups. It is not reasonable to expect these groups to initiate construction of the bridge. The work must begin with the Church.

Additionally, just building the bridge is not enough, the first travelers must be from the Church. Practically this means: if you want to minister to these groups you have to go where they are. That is the first step. When and how to travel back across is another conversation. But that conversation will never happen without the Church building and crossing the bridge first. The Bridge must:
  • Be accessible, inviting, and contextual with a zero barrier for entry
  • Provide a contextual path for spiritual growth and discovering Christian community.

NV Refresher

As a stateside missionary, New Vertical extends the local Church's reach into the buffer zones listed above.

Through the PRCC (The multi-denominational chaplaincy arm of the PCA), our Board of Directors, and the many friends who support us, New Vertical seeks to build a sustainable discipleship pipeline by shepherding those outside the local Church.

Compare it to: RUF, CRU, FCA, YoungLife. These are examples of "going to" a campus. Succesfully engaging a campus requires missional engagement. New Vertical believes our cities have become campuses.

Chaplaincy is Pastoring

The data on the expanding gap between culture and the local Church helps explain why some confuse mentoring, coaching and pastoring. While there is fluidity among these roles, they are very different. Here is a short article on the nuances of each.

We are dependent on external funding. 100% of our finances come from support. Which means pastoring in the unreached portions of the marketplace (the groups listed above) can't happen without your gifts. Thank you. You can give here.

Please Pray for:

Awareness and Funding. If we can reach our four strategic goals (listed below) then we can successfully bridge this GAP from a blind spot to a known opportunity.

Please Pray for:
  • Those in our ministry who are making decisions for Christ. They face significant internal and external challenges.
  • Please pray for wisdom as we seek our top four Strategic Goals:
    • Board Integration (aka longterm planning)
    • Increased Monthly Giving ($50-$300)
    • Church Partnerships
    • Developed Discipleship Pathway
  • Please continue to pray for our family and the New Vertical Board.

Quick First Note

While I have been looking forward to sending this update for several weeks, my efforts just got interrupted with an emergency pastoral call. A friend's life (marriage, work, all the big rocks) is disintegrating. This is one of several similar calls I have had this week.
  • Tuesday: I'm losing my family and job.
  • Wednesday: Can God be trusted?
  • Thursday:
    • What is the Church?
    • How do I lead a divided marriage?
    • Shame feels like an ocean.
I am adding this quick beginning note because the rest of the update sounds very formulaic. But it is important to remember that all the processes listed below represent real lives that are often outside the reach of the local Church. I am reminded of Romans 10:14
"How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?"

Strategic Plan (summary)

I am excited to share an overview of our recently completed strategic plan. Over the past year we have had tremendous growth in bridging the gap between faith and the Marketplace. Some of the key points are listed below.
  • A Portrait of Success
  • Mission and Vision Statement
  • Core Principles
  • Top tier strategic goals
However, if you prefer you can download a more detailed PDF version here

A Portrait of Success

Imagine a bridge connecting Christian community to the Marketplace through a national network of chaplains. It would:
  • Be accessible, inviting, and contextual with a zero barrier for entry
  • Engage three hard to reach portions of the marketplace, such as:
    • Spiritual But Not Religious (SBNR)
    • Major Market Blind-spots
    • Those disassociated from the Church
  • Provide a contextual path for spiritual growth and discovering Christian community.

Mission

Engaging the Marketplace with the Gospel for the flourishing of Christ's Kingdom.

Vision

To build a bridge between Christian community and the Marketplace through a national network of chaplains.

Principles

Narrative:
The value of success and failure are measured by our greater story.
Excellence:
An opportunity to steward the pursuit of our greater narrative.
Hospitality:
The embodiment of our greater narrative through love.

Top Tier Goals

Leadership Engagement: Develop a platform for New Vertical leaders to participate in functional ministry.

Sustainable Monthly Funding: Increase monthly parnternships 14% by end of December 2025.

Create Partnership Process: Create and populate a pipeline for organizational partnership

Clarify Shepherding Approach: Streamline a path from spiritual orientation to Christian flourishing

NV Refresher

As a stateside missionary, New Vertical extends the local Church's reach into three buffer zones that are often beyond the scope of the local Church.

Through the PRCC (The multi-denominational chaplaincy arm of the PCA), our Board of Directors, and the many friends who support us, New Vertical seeks to build a sustainable discipleship pipeline by shepherding those outside the local Church.

Chaplaincy is Pastoring

The data on the expanding gap between culture and the local Church helps explain why some confuse mentoring, coaching and pastoring. While there is fluidity among these roles, they are very different. Here is a short article on the nuances of each.

Because chaplains are pastors, their funding structure is different from coaches or mentors. They are dependent on external funding to equip them for gospel proclamation.

Please Pray

The goals set forth in this strategic plan are designed to address two major obstacles: Awareness and Funding. The need is real. If we can reach these milestones then we can successfully move this GAP from a blind spot to a known opportunity.

Additionally,
  • Please continue to pray for our family and the New Vertical ministry leaders.
